Taiko was also used during warring periods to alert and send messages to other provinces and military Generals of approaching armies. West Covina Taiko is run by James Friesen. Aikido or 'the way of harmony with Universal Energy' Kenjuttsu ~ The Martial Art of Swordsmanship. Kenjittsu goes back to the early ages of Japan where Samurai dueling and survival was dictated by one's skill using the Japanese Sword called 'Nippon-to'. The Nippon-to deals with thrusting - slicing - cutting - blocking - against opponents and in some cases utilizes two swords as used by the Samurai. Peter Komarek - Black-Belt Kenjittsu expert from Czech Republic will be performing a Kenjittsu Kata 'form'. Kata is a pre-arranged series of attacks from imaginary opponents simulating blocks / counters / and combinations using the Nippon-to. Sensei Komarek is a Black-Belt in the art of Batto-Jittsu & Aiki-jittsu. Sensei Komarek will be performing a sword Kata followed by Tamashigiri or sword cutting. Sword cutting was used in ancient Japan, to test the steel strength of the sword and power of the Kenjittsu expert. The cutting will be used on the rolled tatami 'mat', which simulates the average thickness and resistance of the human body limbs. Japanese Koei-Kan Karate-Do ~ Brought to the United States from Japan in 1958, Koei-Kan Karate has been one of the few systems that utilize Bogu (armor) during the fighting stages. This type of full contact fighting allows its practitioners to use full contact battle without the fear of injury. This continues to give the student the option to attempt different strategies and experiment battle tactics thereby producing faster results in personal development. Koei-Kan was brought to SB in 1980 by Jack M. Sabat, West coast head instructor (Shihan) and flourishes today from Los Angeles to Seattle, Wa. Sensei Sabat tutors exclusively private in the SB, Montecito area. Sensei Sabat was also the original teacher of Chuck Liddell for over 12 years. Chuan Fa - Chinese Broad Sword Knife - Defense Tanto Jittsu ~ Jack M. Sabat (Sensei Sabat) ~ 6th Degree Black-Belt with assistance will perform knife defense using a wide range defensive techniques in the art of Goshin-jittsu (self-defense). Human Bed of Nails ~ The bed of nails is comprised of 740 sharp spikes. Sensei Sabat will demonstrate the use of KI (internal strength) while laying on the bed of nails and having approximated 200 lbs of concrete stacked on his chest.
